How We Test Mattresses

Choosing a new mattress is not unimportant. However, it's easy to get lost among all the good mattresses available on the market today. That's why, based on our 2024 mattress test, we have created a top 5 of the best mattresses to help you choose a quality mattress that meets your needs. On this page, we provide detailed information about our 2023 mattress test and how the current top 5 mattresses were determined. Our top 5 mattresses are based on:

The physical tests are conducted at our mattress testing facility in Frankfurt, where we rigorously test all the candidates for our top 5 best mattresses. These tests allow us to objectively evaluate various quality aspects of each mattress, independent of the manufacturers' own tests. Durability

Durability is one of the most important aspects of the mattress test. This test involves simulating the aging of a mattress over a specific period to determine the long-term loss of firmness. We use two different machines for this purpose.

The Roller Machine

This heavy roller continuously rolls on the mattress for hours on end to simulate the movement of our bodies during the night.

The Test Bench

This machine makes it possible to measure the degree of firmness of the mattress before and after passing through the rolling machine.

Point Elasticity

The purpose of the point elasticity test for mattresses is to determine the ability to compress a small part of the mattress without affecting the surrounding areas. In other words, we assess whether it's possible for you to get up during the night without disturbing your partner. For this test, we utilize a specialized indentation machine.

The Indentation Machine

To conduct this test optimally, we utilize an indentation machine that applies pressure to specific areas of the mattress. The less the areas surrounding these compression points are affected, the higher the score for the mattress's point elasticity.

Zoning (lying zones)

The zoning test helps determine the number of zones in a mattress. A zone is a part of the mattress where the body will sink differently than the adjacent parts. Generally, a mattress has between 3 and 7 zones.

The indentation machine for zoning

To test the zoning of a mattress, we use a different type of indentation machine than for the point elasticity test. This machine calculates how deeply the mattress indents at various points (zones).

The more zones a mattress has, the more it will conform to the shape of your body, which is crucial for the level of comfort and support provided by a mattress. Therefore, zoning is also an important criterion for determining the quality of a mattress.

Additional tests: Washability and Ease of use

Durability, point elasticity, and zoning are the three criteria to which we paid the most attention in our 2024 mattress test. However, they are not the only criteria we consider. During our tests, we also take into account two other criteria:

Washability

The score for washability is based on the shrinkage rate of the included cover. The less the cover has shrunk after washing it according to the manufacturer's instructions, the higher the score.

Ease of Use

The score for ease of use is determined based on both the weight of the mattress and the existence and positioning of handles.

A good score on durability is a crucial criterion when choosing a new mattress. The mattress will have a significant impact on the quality of your sleep in the coming years and must maintain its firmness over the long term to ensure optimal sleep quality for an extended period.
